Sustainably Creative by Michael Nobbs

Little and Often

Back to Analogue Series

During my recent break from all things digital, I’ve found myself drawn to many things analogue, things that featured in my life a lot in my youth.

I remember very fondly my first typewriter, trying to learn to touch-type, and the regular cursing as I hit the wrong key or realised I’d misspelled something and having to reach for the whitening fluid. I know how much easier typing on my MacBook’s keyboard is, and the marvels that spell-checkers and the ability to simply delete and retype give us all, but there is something very romantic about the click of the keys and the differing weights of the printed letter on the page that I still enjoy revisiting from time to time. It’s interesting how cheap this analogue machines of old are, sadly the same can’t be said for the ribbons that make them work, so I’ve ben contenting myself with drawing mine, rather than typing with it much.

I’ve made a series of three drawings of the non-digital loves of my life. The compilation cassette I recently made to play in my car, my old typewriter, and the hand-whisk I used as a child to mix Angel Delight and recently rediscovered after my mother died (maybe I’m stretching the definition of analogue here a wee bit, but I’m sure you get what I mean!). The drawings are a mixture of ink and inkjet and I’ve made five copies of each (each one is slightly different and signed and editioned). They are framed and measure 4″ x 6″ and are priced at US$45 each including postage to wherever you are in the world. The complete set of three drawings is available for US$110 (again including worldwide postage). As with everything I’m selling at the moment 10% of all proceeds go to Macmillan Cancer Support.

I'm Michael Nobbs, an artist, blogger and tea drinker (not necessarily in that order).

I'd like to show you that it is possible to stay creative even when energy is in short supply, and how working on small creative acts on a regular basis can build over time into a substantial body of work (and even a creative career).

I've written a book called Sustainable Creativity. You're welcome to pay whatever you would like for it.
