Sustainably Creative by Michael Nobbs

Little and Often

Hot chocolate and staying on creative track

Taking a hot chocolate breakUntil recently I’ve been drinking a lot of hot chocolate. It’s November, chilly and rather grey and there’s very little that’s better than a mug of steaming hot chocolate for dispelling the early winter gloom.

A much needed pause

As well as being sweet and thick and cheering my hot chocolate provides a much need pause in my day.

I’ve written and talked before how the ritual of elevenses provides a wonderful punctuation in the day. A way of stopping and pausing and reflecting. A way to make sure that we are staying on track with what we want to get done in the day, and that that is in tune with our own Important Work.

In need of reminding

I seem to be in need of reminding of all this. I talked earlier on in the week about my planning experiment. How I’m working each day on something specific. There’s a lot of good coming out of my experiment, but one mistake I’ve been making is that I’m letting myself become very driven and am forgetting to take the time to stop and pause. I’m forgetting to drink my hot chocolate.

The result is that I’m getting VERY tired again. Not stopping means I’m not noticing just how tired I am getting. It’s time to heat some milk up, mix up a hot chocolate and take stock…

If you could do with a reminder too…

If you could do with a reminder too, then this recording I made for The World’s Biggest Summit might help. It’s all about elevenses.

I'm Michael Nobbs, an artist, blogger and tea drinker (not necessarily in that order).

I'd like to show you that it is possible to stay creative even when energy is in short supply, and how working on small creative acts on a regular basis can build over time into a substantial body of work (and even a creative career).

I've written a book called Sustainable Creativity. You're welcome to pay whatever you would like for it.
