Sustainably Creative by Michael Nobbs

Little and Often

Don’t get lost in making choices, just pick a direction for today to keep the creative flow flowing

sign-postI woke up this morning with my brain bubbling with things I wanted to get done (last week I had a VERY slow week and so now I have that horrible feeling of “being behind” which I ‘m trying to ignore).

Choices. choices, choices

Should I make a drawing? Should I work on my current chapter for the updated version of Sustainable Creativity? Should I find some links to tweet? Should I write a blog post? Should I make a cup of tea?

I finally decided on the cup of tea (always a good choice), followed by fifteen minutes lying on my yoga mat (I’m trying to create a yoga mat habit at the moment, even if I’m not feeling well enough for the actual yoga). After that I started to feel a little better, not so overwhelmed by choices.

Avoiding getting lost in trying to choose

It’s very easy, especially if we’re tired or feeling behind, to get lost in trying to make a choice. It’s easy to spend all our energy on weighing up options, trying to decide which direction to go in, trying to make the right choice.

Any choice with do

I believe strongly that usually it doesn’t matter which direction we decide to travel in, we just have to pick one. More often than not, as soon as I make a choice about what I’m going to work on, I get a strong feeling of calm and rightness. Just the act of focusing on something, instead of trying to decide between or even juggling a couple of ideas, brings a sense of clarity. The earlier I can do that in my day, the better my day goes.

Making a decision, any decision means:

  1. You no longer need to needlessly waste energy of the decision process.

  2. Things start to fall into place.

  3. Once you begin to work on an idea new possibilities open up, often things you couldn’t have conceived of if you had remained stuck in the decision process.

  4. Something gets done!

Create a possibilities list

If you’re really worried about letting go of other possibilities, write them down on a possibilities list so you can come back to them later. BUT for now get your other possible choices out of your head and off the table.

What direction will you choose to go in today?
