Sustainably Creative by Michael Nobbs

Little and Often

Planning (just a little) for 2011

Coffee shop planningEvery year at this time I’m always tempted to let myself get swept along with the wave of New Year’s resolutions everybody seems to be making.

I’d love to promise myself that I will join the gym, write more, draw more, read more, cook from scratch, etc, etc, etc! But the truth is, as someone with limited energy I am already doing as much as I can. Deciding to add more to my days with only at best lead to feeling defeated when the inevitable happens and I can’t manage the “more” I’ve chosen, or at worst I will make myself iller and not be able to manage what I’m already doing.

So, instead of promising myself that I will add more to my days I use this time of year to evaluate how I use my available energy and rededicate myself to what I consider my Important Work.

I shall be writing more about using this time of year to set priorities with with a clear eye on available energy in the next issue of my free microMag, Getting Your Important Work Done. For today I thought I would just share the things I consider my Important Work for 2011, worked out this morning over a cappuccino and a pot of Earl Grey tea in a local cafe.

I’ve learnt that this level of work feels sustainable (even allowing for the inevitable low energy times) and can be done in short bursts of regular activity. Little and often continues to be my mantra for 2011.

I'm Michael Nobbs, an artist, blogger and tea drinker (not necessarily in that order).

I'd like to show you that it is possible to stay creative even when energy is in short supply, and how working on small creative acts on a regular basis can build over time into a substantial body of work (and even a creative career).

I've written a book called Sustainable Creativity. You're welcome to pay whatever you would like for it.

My new book, Getting Your Important Work Done, is currently free for members to download.
