Sustainably Creative by Michael Nobbs

Little and Often

Reach for something a little closer than the stars (at least as a first step)

tea in front of the fireThis morning I read a lovely blog post over on Mildly Creative. The gist of the post was that instead of reaching for the stars, strive for something a little closer (and more attainable) and you might just end up on the moon.

I love the laid back attitude of this idea, but I don’t think we need to accept the moon if it’s the stars we want to visit. For people like me with low energy (but big ambitions) then the stars are indeed a very big (and exhausting) stretch, but I still want to get out to them someday. The only way for me to do it, is one little step at a time (maybe that’s the same for you).

By reaching for something within reach we can still feel like we’re heading somewhere, so have a sense of achievement (and a sense of achievement is a wonderful source of fuel for another little step). This way, we can enjoy the journey instead of collapsing from over exertion, and still have enough energy for tomorrow’s little (maybe very little) step.

The amazing thing is that these little steps can take us many, many miles. Maybe all the way to the stars.

I'm Michael Nobbs, an artist, blogger and tea drinker (not necessarily in that order).

I'd like to show you that it is possible to stay creative even when energy is in short supply, and how working on small creative acts on a regular basis can build over time into a substantial body of work (and even a creative career).

I've written a book called Sustainable Creativity. You're welcome to pay whatever you would like for it.
