Sustainably Creative by Michael Nobbs

Little and Often

Tools of my trade

Tools of my (dog walking) trade...I’m keeping thing very simple this week. Walking my friend Ben, working on my current twenty minute a day project, making the odd drawing and writing the odd blog post (oh, and drinking plenty of tea in front of the fire).

Young Ben keeps things very simple. A lead and a ball (and a pocket full of pooh-bags!) is all he needs to get his daily entertainment. I’m trying to follow his example.

As far as work is concerned, I’ve only bought my laptop and graphics tablet with me. I’m not really missing my sketchbook at the moment. Interestingly I packed quite a large bag of clothes to bring with me (I’m here dog sitting for the best part of two weeks) but I’m only wearing a fraction of them. As for entertainment, I’m picking a DVD a day to watch (it’s fun visiting other people’s houses and raiding their DVD and video collections!) and treating myself to a sit and a watch after I’ve done the work I want to do each day.

What I’m most surprised about is that in coming here I’d already pared down my things quite considerably, but I’m getting by with even less. Getting by, enjoying myself and feeling like I’m accomplishing things. I’ve realised I can get by with quite a lot less than I thought I needed and am very much enjoying the simple focus of concentrating on one or two things.

I'm Michael Nobbs, an artist, blogger and tea drinker (not necessarily in that order).

I'd like to show you that it is possible to stay creative even when energy is in short supply, and how working on small creative acts on a regular basis can build over time into a substantial body of work (and even a creative career).

I've written a book called Sustainable Creativity. You're welcome to pay whatever you would like for it.
